What’s the difference between the Bosch eDrive system and the Shimano STePS system?
Both systems offer a high quality, pedal assist motor based at the crank, distributing weight evenly throughout the bike. Shimano STePS features a wider Q factor and utilizes square taper cranks, making it perfect for road applications, while Bosch offers a bit more torque in its motor, making it more suitable for both on and off road configurations. With similar battery solutions and life spans, the Bosch eDrive and Shimano STePS systems are by far the leading motor choices in today’s e-bike market.
How much range can I get out of one battery charge?
There are many variables that can affect your range. They include obvious things such as how much weight is on the bike, but range can also be affected by tire pressure, road surface type and gear selection. A seasoned rider using the lowest level of assistance on ideal terrain and in ideal conditions will reach about 75 miles, while the same rider using the lowest level of assistance on the worst possible terrain and in the worst conditions will reach about 40 miles.
What is the warranty on my bike?
All Felt Bicycles models, including our electric line, have a lifetime warranty. This means your bike is warrantied to be free from manufacturing defects in material and/or workmanship for the lifetime of the original owner. The Bosch eDrive unit and the Shimano STePS unit are both warrantied for two years from the original date of purchase.
How long will my battery last?
With proper care, the battery will operate at full strength for 500 cycles (about two years) after which it will retain about 60% of its original capacity. In all, the battery will be serviceable for between 15,000 and 30,000 miles.
How much does the system weigh?
Both the Bosch system and the Shimano system are extremely light. The Bosch system adds less than 14 pounds for the drive unit and motor and the Shimano system adds less than 13 pounds.
What’s the difference between a throttle ebike and pedal assist ebike? Which category does Felt fall under?
Throttle bikes are similar to a scooter; they propel you forward with the twist of a knob and do not require pedaling. Pedal assist bikes, or “pedelecs”, provide power only when the rider is pedaling. This allows the rider to go a greater distance on each charge, provides them with an experience most similar to a traditional bicycle, and is legal on any bike path, bike lane and bike route. Felt Electric Bicycles are all pedal assist.
What special maintenance is needed for an electric bike?
Felt Electric bikes require no more maintenance than needed for a traditional bicycle.
How long does it take for the battery to charge and where can I charge it?
The Bosch Powerpack 400 will go from 0-100% in no more than 3.5 hours. It takes two hours to reach 80% and 1.5 hours to reach a 50% charge. The Shimano STePS battery will reach an 80% charge in just 2 hours, and 100% charge in 4 hours. Both chargers use a standard 110V outlet so charging is accessible anywhere you go.
What if I run out of battery life? Will I still be able to pedal?
Absolutely. Even with a full battery life, you may choose to turn the system off and pedal on your own with no assistance. To prevent riding without assist on longer commutes, you can easily pack your lightweight charger to ensure you will have a full battery heading to your destination and returning to your starting location.
Can I ride my electric bike in the rain?
Yes, both the Bosch and Shimano systems are able to operate in rainy weather. Each electric plug in the motors is secured with a waterproof seal to ensure safety in wet conditions. (Keep in mind, though, that they cannot be submerged in water.)
How do I recharge my battery?
For both Bosch- and Shimano-equipped bikes, the battery may be left onboard the bike or detached for charging.
Will my battery be safe if I leave it outside?
These batteries are safe in all but the most extreme conditions. But it is best for the longevity of the battery to be kept above 32 degrees Fahrenheit and below 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
