Pro triathlon racing has been gradually returning to Europe in recent weeks, and this past weekend saw one of Spain’s most popular events take centerstage: Challenge Anfi Mogan Gran Canaria. Some of the sport’s top European-based pro triathletes attended the event, including Felt athlete Judith Corachan.
The competition kicked off at 8:00 am with the men's start, followed shortly by the women’s division. Nicola Spirig and Sara Pérez were the first to cover the 1900 meters of the swim leg with a time of 27:07, followed 15 seconds later by Sarissa de Vries, while at 1 minute back was Lisa Norden. Judith Corachan emerged in sixth place out of the water at just over 2 minutes behind the head of the race.
Spirig ended up putting a terrific effort during the cycling leg, and she took off alone from the first few kilometers. Behind, Vries and Norden caught up with Sara Pérez. Meanwhile, Judith was intent on producing a measured and thoughtful bike leg aboard her Felt IA race bike, riding hard but knowing that the race on foot was going to be incredibly tough.
Spirig was the first to get off the bike, with Vries and Norden at 2 minutes back. Behind them at more than 5 minutes behind was Katrina Matthews in fourth place, and another minute back later Sara Pérez. Judith was in 6th place in T2, almost 5 minutes behind Sara Pérez.
The event concluded with a 21-kilometer run that was tough due to the heat and humidity. Spirig ended up taking an impressive win in a time of 4:05:52. In second place was Sarissa de Vries with 4:11:17, followed by Lisa Norden with a time 4:11:43. In fourth position came Katrina Matthews with 4:14:06, while Judith Corachan put in an incredibly hard run that saw her climb to fifth place overall with a final time at the finish line of 4:20:22.
“I am super happy with today's race,” said Judith. “Not only for getting into the top five, which was very tough today, but for how well I have found myself and the good rhythms that have come out, especially running. I’m treasuring the gift of competing again, and I want to thank all of the people here in the Canary Islands for their affection and support for the competitors. It was brutal! Thank you!"
